Your first weight-management consultation: what to expect

A straightforward guide to assessment, treatment options, costs and follow-up.

You do not need to know which treatment you want before seeing a doctor. The first consultation is a chance to understand your options and find a starting point that fits your health and your life.

A conversation about more than weight

The doctor may ask about your health history, medicines, previous attempts to manage weight and everyday routines. Your goals matter too, whether that means addressing a health concern, returning to an activity or feeling more comfortable moving.

The clinic can tell you which records to bring. If you think an existing medicine is affecting your weight, raise it during the consultation rather than stopping it yourself.

Options and a reason for the recommendation

A useful consultation explains which approaches may suit you and why. That could involve nutrition, activity or behavioural support, further assessment, medication or specialist care.

You should have room to discuss the expected benefits, potential harms and practical commitment. It is fine to ask, “Why this approach for me?” or to take time before deciding.

A clear picture of the cost

Find out what the assessment fee covers, what follow-up is included and what may be charged separately. If tests or treatment are proposed, the costs should be explained before you agree.

Know what happens after the appointment

Leave knowing the next step, when the plan will be reviewed and whom to contact between visits. Contact hours and the process for urgent concerns should be clear; a chat channel does not necessarily mean continuous monitoring.

You can ask for an explanation again if the plan is unclear. The appointment should leave you better informed, not under pressure to choose a particular treatment.
